One of the most common reasons skincare routines fail is surprisingly simple: people often use products that are not suited to their skin type.
A moisturizer designed for dry skin may feel excessively heavy on oily skin. Similarly, strong oil-control products can weaken and dehydrate already sensitive skin. Understanding your skin type is therefore not just a cosmetic concern—it is essential for maintaining skin barrier health and selecting ingredients that work effectively with your skin physiology.
As an Ayurveda doctor, I find this particularly interesting because Ayurveda has always emphasized individualized skincare. Modern dermatology now supports the same principle: skin behaves differently from person to person based on factors like genetics, sebaceous gland activity, hydration levels, environment, hormones, and barrier function.
What Determines Skin Type?
Scientifically, skin type is largely influenced by the amount of sebum (oil) produced by the sebaceous glands and the skin’s ability to retain moisture effectively.
However, skin type is not always fixed permanently. Age, climate, stress, hormonal fluctuations, medications, and skincare habits can alter the skin over time.
Broadly, skin is categorized into five main types:
Skin
Skin
Skin

Skin
Understanding where your skin falls within this spectrum helps create a more targeted and balanced skincare routine.
Normal Skin: Balanced Sebum and Hydration
Normal skin typically feels comfortable throughout the day without excessive oiliness or dryness. The skin texture usually appears smooth, pores are less visible, and sensitivity is minimal. Barrier function tends to be healthy and stable.
This skin type generally tolerates a wide range of skincare ingredients well, but maintaining hydration and daily UV protection remains important.
Oily Skin: Increased Sebum Production
Oily skin produces excess sebum, often leading to visible shine, enlarged pores, and a greater tendency toward acne or congestion.
This is particularly common in humid climates and during hormonal fluctuations.
A common mistake is over-cleansing oily skin, which can actually trigger further oil production by disrupting the skin barrier.
Dry Skin: Impaired Moisture Retention
Dry skin lacks adequate moisture and lipids, often resulting in tightness, flaking, rough texture, or discomfort after cleansing.
In Ayurveda, dryness is often associated with aggravated Vata, where the skin may require additional nourishment and hydration support.
Combination Skin: Multiple Skin Behaviours Simultaneously
Combination skin displays characteristics of both oily and dry skin.
Typically, the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) appears oilier, while the cheeks may remain normal or dry.
This skin type often requires balanced formulations that hydrate without feeling excessively heavy.
Sensitive Skin: Increased Reactivity
Sensitive skin is less about oil production and more about heightened reactivity.
The skin may experience redness, burning, itching, or irritation in response to environmental triggers, harsh skincare products, or barrier disruption.
This makes barrier repair especially important. Gentle formulations containing soothing ingredients are often beneficial.
A Simple Way to Assess Your Skin Type
One practical method is to cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser and avoid applying any products for about 30 minutes.
Then observe how your skin feels:
- Tight and uncomfortable → likely dry skin
- Shiny throughout → likely oily skin
- Oily only in certain areas → combination skin
- Comfortable and balanced → normal skin
- Easily irritated or reactive → sensitive skin
Skin Type Is the Foundation of Skincare
Modern skincare trends often focus heavily on ingredients and routines, but understanding your skin type remains the foundation of effective skincare.
When products align with your skin’s actual needs, the skin barrier functions more efficiently, irritation reduces, and long-term skin health improves significantly.
Because ultimately, good skincare is not about using the most products. It is about using the right ones for your skin.
